Lord Tim Bell, Margaret Thatcher's former advisor and current PR guru, has criticised the television debates planned for the run-up to the general election.

He says they will be "pointless" and will not service democracy.

Lord Bell made his comments on The Bottom Line programme, in discussion with Julia Hobsbawm of Editorial Intelligence and Robert Phillips of Edelman UK and host Evan Davis.

The Bottom Line is broadcast on BBC Radio 4 and BBC World Service. Subscribe to the podcast or watch it on BBC News Channel.
