Alastair Campbell, one of Tony Blair's closest aides, has revealed that the former prime minister privately offered British support for the invasion of Iraq months before the decision was made formally.

The Iraq Inquiry heard that Mr Blair gave the assurance in a series of letters to former US President George Bush about what would happen if diplomacy failed.

Mr Campbell also said he stood by every word in the controversial intelligence dossier that made the case for war.

Nicholas Witchell reports.
