British Prime Minister Gordon Brown will apologise for the UK's role in sending thousands of children to former colonies in the 20th century, the BBC has learned.
Children in their thousands were sent to Australia and other countries for a new life, but many ended up in institutions or as labourers.
The Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd will make a national apology to the 500,000 "Forgotten Australians" on Monday.
Nick Bryant reports.
