Gordon Brown '"sorry" for offence

Gordon Brown has spoken about a telephone conversation he had with Jacqui Janes on Sunday.

He telephoned the grieving mother of a soldier killed in Afghanistan to apologise after she was upset by a letter of condolence he sent her.

Jacqui Janes had accused Gordon Brown of "insulting" her son Jamie, 20, by misspelling Guardsman Janes's name as "James".

The Prime Minister said the last thing on his mind was to cause her any offence.
