The Conservative Shadow Chancellor, George Osborne, is calling on the government and the Financial Services Authority to ban large cash bonuses for retail bankers.
He wants the money that would be saved to be lent to consumers and businesses who need it during the recession.
Mr Osborne said banks should only be allowed to give out large bonus payments in the form of shares in the company.
