Former Speaker Martin joins Lords

Lord Martin of Springburn
Ex-Speaker Michael Martin - now Lord Martin of Springburn

Former Commons Speaker Michael Martin has taken up his place as a peer in the House of Lords.

Lord Martin of Springburn took his seat as the row over MPs' expenses, which was behind his resignation as Speaker, continued in the Commons next door.

He was the first Commons speaker to be ousted in modern times. By convention they go to the Lords on retirement and sit as a non-partisan crossbencher.

A by-election for his Glasgow North East seat will be held next month.
