Smoking

Smoking has been banned in the chamber and during any of the House's proceedings, including committees, since 1693.

A curious relic of the eighteenth century, however, is the provision of snuff for the use of members and officers of the House.

This is kept at the doorkeeper's box at the entrance to the chamber.

Eating and drinking in the Commons Chamber is also forbidden.

The only exception is for the Chancellor of the Exchequer who is allowed a drink while delivering the Budget speech.
