The helicopter budget for Afghanistan has dominated prime minister's questions after the deaths of eight British soldiers in 24 hours there last week.
Conservative leader David Cameron accused the government of not planning for sufficient resources.
But Gordon Brown hit back, insisting "we have done everything we can to increase the number of helicopters", and that UK forces are "better equipped than ever before".
Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg meanwhile poured scorn on the government's policy over parliamentary and banking reform, telling MPs that "people are crying out for change but we have the spectacle of a prime minister who is busy doing nothing".
