Prime minister's questions

Shortly before the chancellor's Budget statement Prime Minister Gordon Brown returned to the despatch box for his weekly question session, which focused on today's news that unemployment has risen to 2.1 million.

The prime minister reassured MPs that the government will do "everything we can" to help people who have lost their jobs return to work.

But opposition leader David Cameron said the figures reveal the "fastest increase in unemployment in our history".

Nick Clegg, leader of the Liberal Democrats, questioned how many of the one million jobs promised by the prime minister had so far been created.
