Smith accused of violence 'gimmick'

The home secretary has been criticised at the launch of what is been described as the largest ever cross-government public consultation to tackle violence against women and girls.

Sandra Holey, the chief executive of Refuge, told Jacqui Smith that plans for a "perpetrators' register" were a "gimmick". The home secretary said a register was not being proposed.
