In quotes: Reaction to Ivan's death

Conservative Party leader David Cameron's oldest son Ivan, who had cerebral palsy and epilepsy, has died at the age of six. Here is some of the reaction to the news:

CONSERVATIVE PARTY STATEMENT

It is with great sadness that David and Samantha Cameron must confirm the death of their six-year old son Ivan. Ivan, who suffered from cerebral palsy and severe epilepsy, was taken ill overnight and died at St Mary's Hospital, Paddington, early this morning. David and Samantha would ask that their privacy is respected at this terribly difficult time.

PRIME MINISTER GORDON BROWN

I know that the whole House will want to express our sorrow at the sad death this morning of Ivan Cameron, at the age of just six years old, and our condolences go out to David, to Samantha and to the Cameron family. I know that in an all-too-brief young life, he brought joy to all those around him. And I know also that for all the days of his life, he was surrounded by his family's love. Every child is precious and irreplaceable and the death of a child is an unbearable sorrow that no parent should ever have to endure. Politics can sometimes divide us, but there is a common human bond that unites us in sympathy and compassion at times of trial and in support for each other at times of grief. Sarah and I have sent our condolences to David and Samantha, and I know that the whole country, our thoughts and our prayers, are with David and Samantha today.

WILLIAM HAGUE, SHADOW FOREIGN SECRETARY
I spoke to David a little while ago and he's asked me to pass on his thanks for the sympathy already expressed by so many colleagues in this House and beyond. Ivan's six years of life were not easy ones. His parents lived with the knowledge for a long time that he could die young. But this has made their loss no less heartbreaking. They also wanted me to say once again how hugely grateful they are to the many, many NHS and care workers who not only did their utmost for their son this morning but have helped him everyday from the moment he was born. And we should remember today that many other thousands of families are deeply grateful for the dedication, support and love of these highly professional people. We know how much their help has meant to the Cameron family. Ivan their son suffered much in his short life. But he brought joy and love to those around him. And has David himself has said in the past, for him and Samantha he will always be their beautiful boy.

LIB DEM LEADER NICK CLEGG

My heart goes out to David and Samantha at this incredibly difficult time for them and their family.

VINCE CABLE, LIB DEM DEPUTY LEADER, COMMONS STATEMENT
Can I just say a few words on behalf of my party leader, my parliamentary colleagues and my party to extend our deepest sympathy to the Cameron family for the loss of their son Ivan this morning. I think everybody in the House has experienced bereavement but there is something especially sad and shocking about the loss of a child. We recognise, I think all of us, that this is something that is especially difficult to cope with. I would simply express the hope that this is a personal tragedy that transcends all party barriers and I would simply want to express the hope that the family are given the space and there is privacy to grieve and cope with this tragedy that they have experienced.

SHADOW CHANCELLOR GEORGE OSBORNE

When I spoke to him earlier today, one of the things that he wanted to express was his gratitude to all those many people who have not just tried to help Ivan this morning but also since the day Ivan was born have been there to help the Cameron family.

BORIS JOHNSON, MAYOR OF LONDON

I was shocked at the terrible news this morning of the death of Ivan Cameron. My deepest sympathies are with David, Samantha, Nancy and Arthur.

ERIC PICKLES, TORY PARTY CHAIRMAN
The whole party is saddened and shocked at the sad news of the sudden death of Ivan. Our thoughts are with David and Samantha at the tragic and difficult time.

MICHAEL GOVE, SHADOW SCHOOLS SECRETARY

David and Samantha have lived knowing that at any time they might lose Ivan, it's in the nature of the condition that he had, Ohtahara Syndrome, that life expectancy is low. But nevertheless, nothing can prepare you for the loss of a child, and there've been occasions beforehand when Ivan had to be rushed into hospital, severely ill, but thanks to the care and skill of people in the NHS, he had survived. And so, I think, this morning's events really have taken the ground away from underneath David and Samantha.

BARRY NORTON, MR CAMERON'S CONSTITUENCY AGENT

We've been inundated with telephone calls and emails from local people, from people across the country and from overseas as well. They're showing empathy with the situation, many of them. A lot of them have similar problems, in particular, we've had a lot of people saying they fully understand this situation, and are asking us to pass on our condolences to David and Samantha.

SCOTLAND'S FIRST MINISTER ALEX SALMOND

My heartfelt condolences go out to David and his family following the tragic loss of their young son Ivan. Our thoughts are with the family during this sad and difficult time.

KEITH MITCHELL, COUNCIL LEADER IN MR CAMERON'S OXFORDSHIRE CONSTITUENCY

David and Samantha have been inspirational in their care and support for Ivan. This will be a very sad blow for them both. It goes without saying that the team here in Oxfordshire send our heartfelt condolences to them both.

PETER ROBINSON, NORTHERN IRELAND'S FIRST MINISTER

I can think of nothing more tragic than the passing of a young child. My thoughts and prayers are with David and his family at this terribly difficult time.

RHODRI MORGAN, FIRST MINISTER FOR WALES

I would like to extend my deepest sympathy and condolences to David Cameron and his family following the tragic death of his young son. This is a terrible loss and my heart goes out to them.

TIM MONTGOMERIE, EDITOR, CONSERVATIVEHOME.COM

I'm not a close personal friend to David Cameron but speaking to those that are, they all say that this relationship was hugely important to David Cameron, hugely impactful. He was always away from the office whenever he could to be with his son and family. He put time with his son and his family right at the top of his priorities.

SHADOW WELSH SECRETARY CHERYL GILLAN AND TORY WELSH ASSEMBLY LEADER NICK BOURNE

We are devastated for David, Samantha and their whole family. They are devoted parents and we can only begin to imagine the scale of their loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with them at this terribly difficult time.

PLAID CYMRU PARLIAMENTARY LEADER ELFYN LLWYD

I wish to express my deepest sympathy towards David and Samantha Cameron and their family during this tragic time. Our thoughts are with them.

SCOTTISH TORY LEADER ANNABEL GOLDIE
Ivan was a very brave little boy and through his many challenges received unfailing love and support from David and Samantha. Obviously our thoughts are very much with them, Nancy, Arthur and the wider family at this truly difficult time.

ALASTAIR KENT, GENETIC INTEREST GROUP CHARITY
For parents of children with life-limiting and disabling diseases, facing the possibility of their untimely death is a daily prospect. When this happens it is a tragedy that no amount of anticipation can dull. On behalf of the thousands of parents who have lost children to rare life-limiting conditions we offer our sympathy and condolences to David and Samantha Cameron and their family over the loss of their son Ivan.

GRAHAM FAULKNER, NATIONAL SOCIETY FOR EPILEPSY

This is very sad news. Our thoughts are with the Cameron family. Every year nearly 1,000 people in England die of epilepsy related causes, about 400 of which are avoidable. Around 365 of those deaths are young adults and children.

DAVID FORD, NATIONAL CENTRE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE WITH EPILEPSY

We are very saddened to hear this news. We express our deepest sympathy to David and Samantha Cameron and their family.

JON SPARKES, CHIEF EXECUTIVE OF DISABILITY CHARITY SCOPE

We are very sorry for the tragic loss of Ivan Cameron and our thoughts are with his family at this difficult time.

SRABANI SEN, CONTACT A FAMILY DISABILITY CHARITY

"We are sad to hear of the death of Ivan Cameron and our thoughts are with his family at this difficult time. Sadly for some families having a disabled child may also mean they have to face the prospect of losing them. For any parent the death of a child is a devastating loss."
