Lamont's 'green shoots' address

In 1991 then chancellor Lord Lamont was much criticised for saying he detected "the green shoots of economic spring", which was regarded as premature.

His comments have been likened to today's statement by Business minister Baroness Vadera. She stated she could see "a few green shoots" of recovery for the current economic downturn.

Her comments were attacked by the Tories as "insensitive".
