James Landale reviews the political events of 2008.

Wales registered its displeasure with Labour, Ian Paisley retired from Northern Irish politics, and the Scottish Nationalists started the year well but failed to overthrow Labour in Glenrothes.

As London voted in a new mayor and the US prepared to elect a new president, rumours of change in Westminster began circulating - but the financial crisis gave Gordon Brown renewed confidence.
