EU leaders met in Brussels this week to agree a financial rescue plan.
They adopted measures to calm the troubled money markets and called for an international meeting to overhaul world financial rules.
But faced with the threat of recession some EU leaders came close to derailing their own strategy to rescue the planet.
On the Record Europe, Shirin Wheeler asks why some now think that they cannot afford to implement the EU plan to tackle climate change.

During her time in Belgium she has also reported for BBC business programmes, local radio and regional TV. She has two daughters.
