Like other European countries, the average age of Britain's population is increasing. But what are the implications of this trend for politics in the UK?

Andrew Rawnsley discusses what the attitudes and values held by the growing number of older voters mean for the policies and programmes of the main political parties - and for the other age groups in the population.

He is joined by Frank Field MP, New Labour's former welfare reform minister; Shadow Cabinet member and Conservative front-bench spokesman on innovation, universities and skills, David Willetts MP; and the Liberal Democrats' chief spokesman on work and pensions, Steve Webb MP.

This edition of Beyond Westminster was originally broadcast on Saturday, 21 February, 2009 on BBC Radio 4.
