Wilson sacking inevitable - MPs

The Owls lost 1-0 to Watford on Saturday
Hours before the Chancellor, Gordon Brown, delivered his fourth Budget, a different matter altogether was occupying some MPs.

The sacking of Sheffield Wednesday's beleaguered manager Danny Wilson comes two months after four Labour MPs called for him to be fired from the premiership club.

Joe Ashton, Clive Betts, Bill Michie and Education and Employment Secretary David Blunkett called for Wilson to be replaced in January.

At that time, the criticism spurred the Owls on to a 2-0 win but after a dismal defeat against bottom club Watford at the weekend, it was announced on Tuesday that Wilson's contract had been terminated.

Bassetlaw MP Joe Ashton, who resigned as the club's vice president over his earlier comments, said the South Yorkshire outfit had no alternative but to sack the manager.

He said: "It came as a surprise, but really the club had no option.

"The question is the timing, it makes you wonder if this hasn't been done because of a shareholders are having a meeting two weeks from now, their AGM, and are talking about having a vote of no confidence in the board, so it may have been done to pre-empt that."

Of Wilson, he said: "Lovely fellow, but he couldn't do it."

The MP, a shareholder in the team, also placed some of the blame at the door of former director Dave Richards, who now heads the Premier League.

Danny Wilson: 'Lovely fellow, but he couldn't do it'
He backed the idea of employing former Wimbledon boss Joe Kinnear as manager - or even calling on Gillingham's Peter Taylor.

Clive Betts, MP for Sheffield Attercliffe, said: "Obviously no-one takes any pleasure from someone losing their job but given some of the recent results it was probably inevitable and particularly the performance against Watford on Saturday was abject and many of the team didn't seem interested in playing."

He said he believed Peter Shreeves was the right choice to take over from Wilson as an interim manager but wondered if the sacking has come too late for the club.

"He's really been given an almost impossible job but miracles may happen and good luck to him," said Betts.

He pointed out that any manager at Hillsborough would have problems until the financial problems of the side, which is heavily in debt, were sorted out.

"From my point of view, Sheffield Wednesday on paper, looking at the player they are, are not the worst or the second worst team in the premiership, but they haven't played to their potential so you have to ask questions about their manager."

He also backed Kinnear as a possible replacement for Wilson.
