Labour MPs 'sorry' for Tory spoof

The video mimicked WebCameron, the Tory leader's online diary

Two Labour MPs have apologised for a spoof video which invited voters to sleep with the wife of Tory leader David Cameron and to take his children.

Sion Simon, who appeared in the clip, said he was sorry if his attempt to be "edgy and unconventional" had offended.

And fellow MP Tom Watson added that he "unreservedly apologised" for placing the film on the YouTube website.

"Colleagues and newspapers thought it was rude. On reflection, they were right," Mr Watson said on his own blog.

"I did post the video to YouTube and I take responsibility for that," the West Bromwich East MP explained.

Mr Simon, who represents Birmingham Erdington, said it was Mr Watson's decision to remove the minute-long parody after it had been viewed 4,900 times.

However, the decision was "one with which I'm perfectly comfortable", Mr Simon said.

"We were trying to make some serious political points in a slightly edgy and unconventional way, but I was always very clear there was never any intention to cause offence and if anybody was offended by any of it, then I'm sorry."

People trying to access the spoof are now greeted with the message: "This video has been removed by the user."

'That's cool'

Mr Simon wore a baseball cap and called himself Dave in his parody of the Tory leader's own WebCameron blog.

"Yo. My name's Dave, yeah? Thing is, I'm just like you," he said.

David Cameron launched his blog to appeal more to young people

"I've got the same worries, the same troubles, the same cares, the same trouble and strife.

"Want to sleep with my wife? That's cool. Come down, check it out, we'll sort it out. Safe," added the 37-year-old.

"I've got two kids - kid one, kid two. You like them? Take one - that's cool."

Tory MP Peter Luff said Mr Simon should be "thoroughly ashamed of himself" for bringing politics "into disrepute".

Andrew Mitchell, another Conservative MP, said Mr Simon had "obviously gone mad", while Labour's Stephen Pound described it as "insulting" and "sinister".

Mr Cameron has tried to communicate more effectively with young people through his own weblog, launched last month.
