Tories shrug off Cameron send-up

The Conservatives have shrugged off a spoof video by a Labour MP who invites voters to sleep with David Cameron's wife and take his children away.

Sion Simon wears a baseball cap and calls himself Dave in the film, mocking the Tory leader's own WebCameron blog.

The Birmingham Erdington MP said it was "satire" and "not the slightest bit offensive", and promised to remove it "immediately" if Mr Cameron asked him.

The Tories countered that Mr Simon had "never been taken seriously" anyway.

In the video, on the YouTube website, Mr Simon is heard to say: "Yo. My name's Dave, yeah? Thing is, I'm just like you.

"I've got the same worries, the same troubles, the same cares, the same trouble and strife.

"Want to sleep with my wife? That's cool. Come down, check it out, we'll sort it out. Safe."

The 37-year-old adds: "I've got two kids - kid one, kid two. You like them? Take one - that's cool."

In response, a Conservative spokesman said that people should visit the real Webcameron site to find out more about the party and its leader.

Tory MP Peter Luff said Mr Simon should be "thoroughly ashamed of himself".

"When you go over the top like this, you bring all of us in politics into disrepute.

"I just can't believe that a fellow MP would stoop so low. It's highly offensive."

Fellow Conservative MP Andrew Mitchell said Mr Simon had "obviously gone mad".

And Labour MP Stephen Pound described it as "a new low in British politics", saying he thought Mr Cameron's wife Samantha would be "hurt and insulted" by such "sinister" remarks.

But Mr Simon responded by claiming Mr Cameron had "become almost surreal in the extent to which he'll say anything to anybody if he thinks it's what they want to hear".

It was "irritating and disappointing" that he "lets the whole political class down in an incredibly tokenistic and shallow way trying to appropriate what he thinks of as a youth medium", he said.

Mr Simon told BBC News 24: "Nobody in the Labour party has said anything to me other than, 'Well done, good effort, very funny.'"

Fellow Labour MP Tom Watson, who is believed to have posted the spoof online, said it was "a great shame" if "people can't laugh at themselves and politicians can't be funny".

"He's cracking a gag. This is a way of gently sending up David Cameron's attempt to market himself to a younger generation," he told Sky News.

Mr Cameron launched his own video weblog last month to try to get his message across to young people.

His wife and their children feature in some of the diaries, the most prominent of which sees him introducing the site while doing the washing up.

A Labour Party spokesman refused to say whether the party was embarrassed by Mr Simon's video blog, saying: "It's a matter for Sion."

Commons leader Jack Straw said he had not seen it, but added: "I believe we have to ensure that political discourse is at the highest level."
