A millionaire businessman whose company donated more than 2 million to the Liberal Democrats has been remanded in custody after appearing in court.

Michael Brown, 40, who was based in Spain, is accused of obtaining a passport by deception and making a false statement to obtain the passport.

He is also facing fraud charges brought by the HSBC bank. The case does not involve the Liberal Democrats.

Brown appeared before Bow Street Magistrates Court in London.

He was arrested in Madrid by officers of the City of London Police economic crime department assisted by the Spanish authorities.

Brown wore a dark coat, orange jumper and white shirt at the short hearing on Wednesday and spoke only to give his name and date of birth.

He was remanded in custody to appear at Southwark Crown Court on 2 August.
