The immigration debate is a hot topic in the UK and at the centre of it is the Immigration and Nationality Directorate.
The section of the Home Office responsible for immigration control, the IND also considers applications for permission to stay in the UK, citizenship and asylum.
It has an annual budget of £1.5bn and employs around 15,000 people in total. The chart below shows how the main parts of the IND are organised, with particular emphasis on departments involved in the removal of failed asylum applicants from the UK
