Printing and publishing charges for MPs' Early Day Motions have almost doubled since 2001, figures show.
The cost of EDMs, a form of petition unlikely to be debated in the Commons,
was £614,000 in 2004-05, up from £338,000 in 2001-02.
But the cost per printed page has been kept at about £60 in the last
three years, down from £77 in 2000-01.
In 2001-02 an average of 41 EDMs were tabled by MPs each week, compared with 60 in 2004-05.
The figures are supplied in a Commons written reply from Liberal Democrat Nick Harvey.
EDMs allow MPs to put on record their opinions on a subject and seek support from fellow Members who sign the motion.
