Consultant to the Princess Royal Trust for Carers, working on national policy issues - published two research reports (with colleague, Malcolm Clarke).

Mainly hard-working but not as committed to all subject areas (and hopeless at art and chemistry).

WHAT ATTRACTED YOU TO POLITICS?

I wanted to work to improve quality of life and rebuild communities destroyed by Thatcherism in the 80s and 90s.

WHAT'S THE BEST/WORST THING ABOUT BEING AN MP?

Best - being able to solve problems affecting people's lives/ make policy changes that will improve the constituency/country/other countries now or in the future.

Worst - the time it can take to solve problems for people, also issues on which change cannot be made.

No single favourite. My current eight for Desert Island Discs would be: Bob Dylan - Its all over now, Baby Blue; Billy Bragg - Between the wars; Pulp - Common People; Che Gelida Manina/Si, Mi chiamano Mimi - La Boheme; Sempre Libera - La Traviata; Cantique de Jean Racine - Faure; Otis Redding - Try a little tenderness and Bill Withers - Ain't No Sunshine.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR FASHION SENSE?

I don't get time to shop for clothes.

WHAT'S YOUR IDEA OF A GOOD NIGHT OUT?

Sharing a good meal with friends or going to a live music performance (concert/opera/other), we also enjoy stand-up comedy performances.
