Loonies pay respects to Sutch

Lord Sutch on the campaign trial

The leader of the Official Monster Raving Loony Party, Screaming Lord Sutch is being laid to rest on Monday in a funeral service.

Lord Sutch was found dead on 16 June at his London home, after apparently committing suicide. He will be buried at Pinner New Cemetery.

The memorial service for Britain's longest-serving party leader is expected to be attended by Loonies from across the UK, as well as friends and family.

Lord Sutch's former election campaigns director John Tempest said: "There will be a funny eulogy, but the service will also have dignity and flamboyance.

"It will be a respectful service because family and friends who loved him will be there to grieve."

David Edward Sutch changed his name to Screaming Lord Sutch the 3rd Earl of Harrow during the 1960s.

He became famous for fighting dozens of by-elections during his 36 years as party leader - never once managing to retain a deposit, although on one occasion his party did get more votes than the now defunct SDP.

He was well loved by both the public and politicians for bringing colour and humour to politics and was instantly recognisably in his top hat and garish jackets.

Most of his party's policies such as turning the European butter mountain into a ski slope and breeding fish in the wine lake so they would come out ready pickled never caught on.

But Lord Sutch could and did claim responsibility for some original policies that caught on, such as votes for 18-year-olds, abolition of the 11-plus exam and all-day opening for pubs.

The service will be led by the Reverend Alan Hume and will be relayed by loudspeaker to the crowds expected to gather outside the church.

Mourners will join in singing the traditional hymns, The Lord's My Shepherd, Lead Us Heavenly Father, Lead Us and Guide, O Thou Great Jehovah as well as one of Lord Sutch's favourite rock songs, Roll Over Beethoven.

One of Lord Sutch's trademark top hats is to be placed on his coffin.
