US President George Bush has promised a "timely decision" on whether to end controversial tariffs on steel imports.
At a news conference with Tony Blair during the president's state visit to the UK he said his administration was "committed to free trade".
Mr Blair had raised the issue with him three times. "It is on his mind," he said. "It is also on my mind."
The World Trade Organisation says the tariffs break international trade rules and the EU plans retaliatory sanctions.
