Dr Richard Taylor

Date of birth

7 July 1934

Political profile

Richard Taylor is the only Independent MP in the present House of Commons.

He defeated a sitting government minister in 2001 to take Wyre Forest after campaigning on a single issue - saving the local Kidderminster Hospital which the government plans to downgrade.

Dr Taylor worked at Kidderminster Hospital as a consultant for more than 20 years before retiring in 1995.

He mainly speaks in the Commons on the health service.

Nonetheless, his election address also laid out his views on other matters, which defy political categorisation.

He supports a reduction on fuel taxation and the renationalisation of the railways.

He is mildly Eurosceptic, backs section 28 on preventing local councils promoting homosexuality, and supports the availability of cannabis as a controlled drug.
