Rob Marris
Date of birth 8 April 1955 Political profile Rob Marris' CV looks like a classic Old Labour story: he has worked in factories, as a bus driver and as a fire-fighter. In fact, these were jobs he took to support himself through university after he left public school. He has a double first in sociology and history from the University of British Columbia and on his return to England qualified as a solicitor, in which capacity he worked up to his election in 2001. Nonetheless, his blue collar experiences have informed his politics. He is a committed trade unionist - he worked for a legal practice specialising in union law. He is also an environmentalist and was a very early campaigner with Greenpeace, being the group's 204th member worldwide. He has called for a further liberalisation of Britain's trade union laws.
