Political profile

Ken Purchase was first elected for the seat of Wolverhampton North East in 1992, at his second attempt.

He is well known in his constituency, where he had long served as a councillor.

He was also one of the leading advocates of Wolverhampton's successful bid for city status.

He is on the left of the party's mainstream, but was been brought into government through his role as Parliamentary Private Secretary to Robin Cook.

He held that position from 1997, and followed Mr Cook from the Foreign Office after the 2001 reshuffle.

He was very loyal to his boss and resigned with him in March 2003 over military action against Iraq .

He has also demonstrated a marked fondness for and advocacy of, the state of Bahrain.
