Stephen Hesford

Date of birth

27 May 1957

Political profile

A strong locally based campaigner who succeeded in winning and then retaining a very marginal seat, Stephen Hesford has not had a high political profile since his election to the Commons in 1997.

He is a left leaning Blair loyalist, with a particular interest in poverty and social exclusion issues.

He is also on the modernising, radical wing of the party and has campaigned on electoral reform and environmental issues.

His most effective appearances in the Commons came during his membership of the Commons health select committee, when he proved to be a redoubtable critic of the tobacco industry.

He is a criminal barrister by profession and was reprimanded by the Bar Council after pulling out of a court date following his unexpected 1997 victory.

His obligations as an MP were judged to be a "non-professional" engagement.
