Mike Hall

Date of birth

20 September 1952

Political profile

Mike Hall was first elected to the Commons in 1992, having previously led Warrington Borough Council.

A teacher by profession, he was an effective critic of Tory policies on both education reform, such as the unsuccessful nursery vouchers scheme and on local government.

He supports the greater devolution of power to local level and was a member of the powerful Commons public accounts select committee.

Since Labour came to power, however, he has been less visible in the Commons, mainly because, apart from a brief spell as parliamentary private secretary (PPS) to Ann Taylor, he spent all of the 1997 Parliament as a whip.

He was a victim of the Whips' Office clear out which Tony Blair instigated after the 2001 election, but remains part of the "payroll vote" as PPS to Health Secretary Alan Milburn.
