Angela Eagle

Date of birth

17 February 1961

Political profile

Angela Eagle was first elected in 1992 - five years before her twin sister Maria - and established herself a reputation as a hard-hitting, intellectually able MP on the left of the Labour Party.

She was soon promoted into the Whips' Office and joined the government as a junior environment minister in 1997.

She was promoted to the DSS and later to the politically sensitive immigration brief at the Home Office, but was unceremoniously dumped in the May 2002 ministerial reshuffle.

She has been active in Labour politics all her life and was a full time union official before entering the Commons.

A keen sports player and a former junior chess champion, she is also a relentless opponent of sexual discrimination and a tireless advocate of equal treatment of men and women.
