John Randall

Date of birth

5 August 1955

Political profile

John Randall bucked a Conservative trend in July 1997 when he won the Uxbridge by-election to enter Parliament.

He was the first Tory to win a by-election since William Hague in 1989.

He has since demonstrated himself to be out of step with the bulk of his party's opinion on some other matters, such as hunting: he supports a ban.

He has a wide interest in animal welfare and is an expert ornithologist.

When he topped the ballot for private members' bills in 2001, he introduced a bill on marine environmental protection.

He is also one of the few MPs of any parties who can speak Serbo-Croat and took a more conciliatory line towards Serbia than most during the Kosovo crisis, while still condemning Milosevic personally.

He is generally a mainstream, non-partisan Conservative. He sat on the Commons deregulation committee throughout the 1997 Parliament and in 2000 became a whip, a post he retained after Iain Duncan Smith's first appointments.

However, he resigned from the Conservative frontbench in March 2003, since he opposed the Conservative leadership's support for military action in Iraq.
