Roger Gale

Date of birth

20 August 1943

Political profile

Roger Gale, an MP since 1983, is a vice-chairman of the Conservative party with responsibility for presentation and strategy.

He served as a parliamentary private secretary to successive ministers of state in the Ministry of Defence between 1992 and 1995.

Mr Gale is a Eurosceptic who has been critical of the UK's asylum system.

He is also one of the strongest supporters in the Commons for the return of the death penalty.

His other views include zealous support for greater animal welfare legislation - he is one of the few Conservatives to have supported a ban on fox hunting.

Mr Gale also campaigns on what is seen as another left-wing favourite, opposing the Turkish occupation of Cyprus.
