Bill Cash

Date of birth

10 May 1940

Political profile

Until 1992, Bill Cash did not have a high profile. That changed, however, after his well-publicised opposition to the Maastricht Treaty.

Mr Cash has a strong interest in small business and deregulation and takes a socially conservative view on pornography and abortion.

He had attempted to pass a bill granting greater protection from press intrusion.

However, a deep-seated opposition to federalism led him to denounce the Treaty of Maastricht and vote against its passage through the Commons.

Since then he has become identified as one of Parliament's leading Eurosceptics.

He set up a think-tank, the European Foundation, specifically to help Eurosceptics develop their own research and policy initiatives - although he avoided becoming one of the Tory rebels to lose the party whip.

Iain Duncan Smith appointed Bill Cash Shadow Attorney General in 2001 - while not a member of the shadow cabinet, he used to attend its meetings by invitation. He was also responsible for shadowing Constitutional Affairs.

When Michael Howard was appointed Leader, he returned to the backbenches.
