Anne McGuire

Date of birth

26 May 1949

Political profile

Anne McGuire entered the Commons in 1997, when she unseated the incumbent, Scottish Secretary Michael Forsyth.

She had been selected from an all-woman shortlist after many years as a prominent Labour and trade union activist in Scotland.

She was notable soon after her election for her commitment to a ban on handguns.

Ms McGuire quickly began to climb the ranks of government, becoming parliamentary private secretary to Donald Dewar and then entering the government whips' office in 1998.

She survived the reshuffle of the whips which followed the 2001 election and a year later moved to become a junior minister at the Scotland Office.
