Clive Betts

Date of birth

13 January 1950

Political profile

Clive Betts was returned to the back benches in the reshuffle following the 2001 general election and said that he welcomed the opportunity to speak after four years' enforced silence: he spent all of Labour's first term as a government whip.

He has the same background as David Blunkett - both are former leaders of high profile Sheffield Council.

Betts, who was formerly on the party's left but recently a Blair loyalist, pioneered the formation of partnerships between the council and local businesses.

His Commons contributions have mainly been about levels of local government finance.
