Irene Adams
Irene Adams

Date of birth

27 December 1947

Political profile

Irene Adams became an MP after a 1990 by-election when she inherited the seat which had been held by her late husband, Allen Adams.

Since then she has consolidated her position with three victories at general elections.

Ms Adams is on the left of the Labour Party; she campaigned against the Gulf war and is a Eurosceptic.

She has also been a member of a 'Real Equality' grouping, opposed to affirmative action for women in politics.

The Paisley MP is, however, loyal to the government and did not vote against it in the last Parliament.

Her most prominent work as an MP has been in opposition to the drugs trade in her constituency - she has fought a high profile campaign which led to threats against her from local gangs.
