Richard Bacon

Date of birth

3 December 1962

Political profile

Richard Bacon is in many ways typical of the modern politician.

He joined his party as a teenager and says that he knew he wanted to be an MP from the age of 10.

This ambition led him to a degree in politics and economics, and the self-sacrifice of standing in hopeless seats, such as his 1997 battle in Vauxhall.

His pre-election career fits in well with Conservative traditions, including stints as an investment banker and financial journalist before founding his own communications company.

He is Eurosceptic, pro-fox hunting and no great fan of the Human Rights Act, which he said "the next Conservative government should consider repealing".

Mr Bacon has a confident debating style and was given one of the precious Conservative places on the Commons public accounts select committee soon after his election in 2001.

In 2003, he also became a member of the European Scrutiny Select Committee. Contact
