Paul Flynn
Paul Flynn

Date of birth

9 February 1935

Political profile

Paul Flynn was first elected to the Commons in 1987 and soon after became a front bench spokesman on social security.

This was to prove the peak of his career in the Labour mainstream and he is now firmly on the back benches, although he enjoys a higher profile than many ministers.

He is one of the most outspoken MPs in the Commons and is unafraid of offending through mockery members of any party.

Mr Flynn carries this over into his books, such as Dragons led by Poodles, a satirical account of the contest between Alun Michael and Rhodri Morgan for leadership of Welsh Labour, as well as on his voluminous website.

He does, however, have a serious side which manifests itself on his strong campaigning on behalf of his constituents and on a clutch of specific issues.

Foremost among these is the medicinal use of cannabis, of which he is a perpetual advocate.

He is against nuclear power, helping to found the Welsh Anti-Nuclear Alliance.

Mr Flynn is also a leading defender of Welsh interests and is a member of the Gorsedd of Bards.
