Elfyn Llwyd
Elfyn Llwyd

Date of birth

26 September 1951

Political profile

First elected in 1992, Elfyn Llwyd has, like most Plaid Cymru MPs, has been a party spokesman on many issues.

In 1999, he became the leader of the Plaid Cymru Parliamentary Party as, at the time, the only PC MP not also to be a member of the Welsh Assembly.

He is a good humoured and intelligent speaker, who has become notably more party political since taking on the parliamentary leadership.

In addition to a commitment to Plaid's aims for greater devolution for Wales, Mr Llwyd is particular advocate of greater recognition of and support for the Welsh language.

A lawyer by profession, he is also a keen social reformer and moderniser and an anti-nuclear campaigner.

In 2001, he announced, with Alex Salmond, the formation of a joint Nationalist bloc in Westminster.
