Maria Eagle
Date of birth 17 February 1961 Political profile Maria Eagle entered the Commons in 1997, joining her twin sister Angela in Parliament. In 2001 she followed her into government when she was appointed a junior minister in the newly formed Department of work and Pensions. She had demonstrated her intellectual clout on the Commons public accounts committee, and had honed her political skills by successfully seeing her Fur Farming (Prohibition) Bill through to Royal Assent (it was defeated as a private members' bill, but picked up by the government). Ms Eagle is a solicitor by profession, and previously specialised in employment and housing law. She is also a pamphleteer, and has called for a return of all-women shortlists, having been selected from one herself. She is strongly constituency focused, and is a punchy and witty performer in the Commons. Contact
