Kevin McNamara
Kevin McNamara

Date of birth

5 September 1934

Political profile

Kevin McNamara is one of the longest-serving MPs in the Commons, having first been elected in 1966.

He has always been on the left of the party - he had to resign as a Parliamentary Private Secretary in the first Wilson government after voting against a White Paper.

He served for 13 years as a frontbencher, but they coincided with Labour's wilderness years.

He was a defence spokesman and, most successfully, a Shadow Northern Ireland Secretary.

He stood out in the latter role as being as strongly anti Sinn Fein and the IRA as he was anti-unionist, supporting the democratic unification of Ireland.

He was replaced by Mo Mowlam in 1995, but resigned from the front bench soon after in protest against Labour support for Tory policy in the province.

He continues to take a strong interest in the subject.

He also campaigns strongly on animal welfare, and introduced a bill seeking to ban fox hunting in 1991.

He has voted against the Blair government on several occasions, over matters such as changes to incapacity benefit and the curtailment of the right to jury trial.
