John Cryer
John Cryer

Date of birth

11 April 1964

Political profile

John Cryer, as a young journalist and long-term Labour activist, fits the scheme for a classic Blairite loyalist.

But he is instead one of the most rebellious Labour MPs in the Commons.

It runs in the family. His father Bob was a close friend of Tony Benn and Dennis Skinner, while his mother Ann is the equally rebellious MP for Keighley.

Before entering Parliament he worked mainly for the left wing publications Tribune and The Morning Star.

Since his election, his greatest Parliamentary energies have gone into the fight to save the Ford plant at Dagenham, which employed many of his constituents.

But his left wing views have also received many airings.

He favours full renationalisation of the rail industry, and is also against UK adoption of the euro.
