Andrew Stunell
Andrew Stunell

Date of birth

24 November 1942

Political profile

Even before his election to the Commons in 1997, Andrew Stunell had a long track record as a political activist.

He stood in every general election since 1979, and was a long serving councillor. Unusually, he has retained his council seat since entering Parliament.

He was also political secretary of the Association of Liberal Democrat Councillors.

He is an expert on political process and a committed advocate of constitutional change in both local and national government.

After serving as Liberal Democrat Deputy Chief Whip throughout the 1997 Parliament, he was elected Chief Whip by Lib Dem MPs in 2001, at party leader Charles Kennedy's recommendation.

His other political interests betray a classic Liberal sensibility - he is a campaigner on environmental issues and against nuclear power, and a strong supporter of Third World debt reduction.

He is also a keen table tennis player.
