John McDonnell
John McDonnell

Date of birth

8 September 1951

Political profile

John McDonnell was first elected to Parliament in 1997, and was re-elected in 2001.

He has made many criticisms of the government's record in office.

A long term political activist, he was the Deputy Leader of the GLC under Ken Livingstone, and has continued to plough a left wing furrow.

He is one of the most rebellious Labour MPs, having voted against the government on numerous occasions on matters such as benefits and private finance.

A member of the Campaign Group, he has called for widespread renationalisation, and fiercely criticised the party for accepting sponsorship from a fast food chain at its annual conference.

He has supported anti-globalisation protests, and is a Eurosceptic.

He is also interested in Irish politics, and campaigns on the welfare of the Irish population in Britain.
