Political profile

Parmjit Dhanda, 29 when elected in 2001 and is one of the younger MPs in the Commons.

After obtaining a degree in electronic engineering, he worked as an organiser for the Labour Party and then for the Connect, the union for communications professionals.

He stood for the European Parliament in the 1999 elections, on the party's South East list.

He is keen to increase democratic participation, and has some innovative proposals.

Before the election he ran surgeries for young people via text messaging on his mobile phone.

He successfully campaigned for postal workers to be issued bicycle helmets.
