Stephen Pound

Date of birth

3 July 1948

Political profile

Stephen Pound was first elected to the Commons in 1997, after a high profile career in local government.

He retained his seat with an increased majority in 2001 after making a big impact as a backbencher despite little or no chance of joining the frontbench.

A self-mocking bruiser who takes pride in being rough around the edges, he caused a stir in the 2001 campaign when in a case of mistaken identity he accused a voter of being a "middle-class whinger".

His serious concerns include homelessness, a subject on which he worked before his election, and Europe, for which he is an enthusiast.

He is also one of the most committed Parliamentary supporters of the scouting movement.
