Hugo Swire
Date of birth 30 November 1959 Political profile Hugo Swire, like a large number of the new intake of Tory MPs in 2001, is an Old Etonian. He combines this with many other classic old school Tory credentials. He held a commission in the Grenadier Guards, and became Director of Sotheby's via a stint as a financial consultant. He is the son-in-law of former defence secretary John Nott. He cites the constitution and Europe as his major political interests. With his financial background, he has engaged in a large amount of charity fundraising, often serving as an auctioneer, and is a member of the Executive Committee of Team 1000 - a cash raising arm of the Tory Party. After a spell in the Whip's Office he was promoted, in November 2004, to shadow minister for the arts following the sacking of Boris Johnson.
