Anne Campbell
Date of birth 6 April 1940 Political profile Anne Campbell won her third term as MP for Cambridge in 2001. Ms Campbell is a committed Labour moderniser who on the whole has been a loyal supporter of the Prime Minister. Indeed, in her enthusiasm for proportional representation and the single currency, she goes further than many of her colleagues. Despite her record of loyalty, she was opposed to military action against Iraq and, in March 2003, resigned from her position as PPS to Patricia Hewitt over the issue. In January 2004 she was a leading opponent of the government's proposals for top-up fees and eventually abstained at the second reading of the Higher Education Bill. She has a strong local link to her seat, having studied and worked there all her life. But she met with controversy when she voted to introduce student tuition fees, having campaigned against them before 1997. She is a great supporter of the internet and new technologies. She was the first MP to have her own website, back in 1995. She was also one of the prime backbench agitators for reform of Commons working hours and practices.
