Win Griffiths

Date of birth

11 February 1943

Political profile

Win Griffiths is a long serving Labour trouper, who was an MEP for eight years before joining the Commons in 1987.

Comfortably within the Labour mainstream and formerly close to Neil Kinnock, he served on the Labour frontbench in a variety of roles throughout the Major government.

He entered the government as a junior Welsh Office minister in 1997, a role for which his strong regionalism and strongly pro-devolution ideas made him ideal.

However, he left the government after an uneventful year and is now a senior backbencher and chair of the Welsh Grand Committee.

A former teacher, he is keen on educational issues and also takes a strong interest in Africa, having lived in Tanzania.

His major interest is in the EU and its funding.

He was the House of Commons' representative on the body which drafted the controversial EU Charter of Fundamental Rights.

A Christian Socialist, he was one of the few Labour MPs to vote against equalising the ages of consent.

Mr Griffiths will not be standing at the next general election.
