Khalid Mahmood

Date of birth

13 July 1961

Political profile

Khalid Mahmood entered the Commons in 2001 amid controversy, with outgoing MP Jeff (now Lord) Rooker refusing to support him and members of the local Labour party unwilling to campaign for him.

But claims of irregularities at the selection meeting were dismissed by Labour's own investigation.

The mechanical engineer was a close ally of Roy Hattersley on the right of the party - though he rejects that label - and a leading opponent of Militant in the 1980s.

As England's only Muslim MP, he was a staunch defender of British military action in Afghanistan and accused Israel of committing "war crimes" in Jenin.
